How does occupied space affect player actions?
Quick answer
Occupied spaces affect data bonuses (first player only), sector completion outcomes, and trigger effects when probes move into them (e.g., comets). They do not block subsequent players from landing or acting, except for specific first-player rewards.
Details
Planet Occupation
- The first player to land on a planet gains data and covers the data space, preventing later players from receiving that data [p.10 — Planetary Board].
- Multiple players can land on the same planet simultaneously, with no limit on landers [p.10 — Planetary Board].
Sector Completion
- When a sector is completed, the player with the most markers wins and leaves a permanent marker beside the star. This marker does not affect future sector wins but tracks past victories [p.13 — Completing a Sector].
- The second-place player leaves a marker in the first data slot space, which remains until the sector is reset [p.13 — Resetting the Sector].
Probe Movement and Rotation
- If solar system rotation pushes a probe into a comet space, the player gains publicity immediately, even if not their turn [p.28 — FAQ].
- Probes in cutouts may be bumped into new spaces during rotation, potentially triggering effects like comet visits [p.16 — Rotating the Solar System].
Tech and Special Cases
- Probe techs allow landing on moons, which function like planets but require the tech. Occupation of a moon does not block others [p.17 — Probe Techs].
- In solo mode, the rival’s movement considers occupied planets when choosing a destination [p.25 — Orbiter / Lander].
Watch out:
While occupied spaces don’t block actions, first-player bonuses (e.g., data on planets) are irreversible. Always prioritize claiming these early to deny opponents.
