How do Mission claims work?
Quick answer
In Scotland, players claim Private Missions by placing a Cathedral adjacent to a Cathedral space, drawing a card. In Ireland, the first player to complete a Public Mission scores the higher value; others score the lower value afterward.
Details
Scotland (Private Missions)
- When a player places a Tile adjacent to a Cathedral space for the first time, they place one of their Cathedrals on it and draw a Mission Card from the deck [p.4 — CATHEDRALS].
- The mission’s condition is kept private, and points are scored at the end of the game if the condition is met. Multiple players can satisfy the same mission independently, even if tied [p.4 — CATHEDRALS].
Ireland (Public Missions)
- Public Missions are displayed face-up above the Board. The first player to fulfill a mission’s condition scores the higher point value (e.g., 8 points) and places a Cathedral under that number. Subsequent players who complete the same mission score the lower value (e.g., 5 points) [p.7 — PUBLIC MISSION CARDS].
- Each player can complete each Public Mission only once. Missions requiring linked Castles or Round Towers use contiguous occupied spaces (Castles/Towers themselves are not counted as part of the connection) [p.7 — PUBLIC MISSION CARDS].
Watch out: In Ireland, if a player triggers a mission completion but another player already claimed the higher score, they must score the lower value. Ensure missions are checked immediately after Tile placement to avoid missing scoring opportunities.
Ireland (Private Missions via Round Towers)
- Activating the "Draw a Public Mission Card" Round Tower Bonus lets a player take a Public Mission as a Private Mission. This is scored at the end of the game if completed, using the higher point value [p.8 — Draw a Public Mission Card].
