When can I discard Item cards?

Item cards can be discarded in the following situations:

Voluntary Relinquishment: A player may discard an Item card from their inventory at any time by removing the die resting on it and discarding all cards forming the item. This is allowed unless the item’s effect prohibits it (e.g., certain items cannot be deconstructed voluntarily) [p.20 — Items].

Durability Depletion: When an item’s durability (tracked by a die) reaches zero, it is immediately discarded. This occurs after using the item (lowering its die by 1) or due to effects that reduce durability [p.20 — Combining an item, p.21 — Using an item].

Consequence of Actions/Events: If an action or event explicitly instructs discarding an Item card (e.g., "discard this item"), players must comply. Additionally, when taking an Item card as a consequence of an action, the player may choose to discard it instead of adding it to their inventory [p.15 — Consequences of actions and events – An item].

Character Elimination: If a character is eliminated, they must discard all Item cards in their inventory [p.22 — Eliminated character].
Watch out:
Discarding an Item card during the "Discard" step of action resolution (page 12) only applies if the item no longer has a die. Always ensure the die is removed before discarding to avoid confusion.
