How does the Mars Surface board affect gameplay?

Quick answer

The Mars Surface board (alternative side) adds outdoor exploration with different movement rules, a d12 noise die, Crossroads/Areas instead of corridors, and Mars Surface cards with environmental hazards. [p.30 — Alternative Side of the Board]

Details

The alternative board layout depicts an underground facility partially built into a cliff face with buildings and areas on the Mars surface. While the underground base follows standard Nemesis rules, the Mars Surface part operates differently. [p.30 — Overview]

When performing a Noise roll on the Mars Surface (Crossroads and Buildings), you use a d12 Mars Surface die instead of the standard d10 dice. Results of 1-4 and Silence work normally, but a special symbol result requires you to draw and resolve a Mars Surface card, which describes environmental occurrences. Characters with an Enviro-Suit or in Buildings apply a reduced effect from these cards. [p.32 — Mars Surface Die & Deck]

Movement on the Mars Surface uses Paths (special corridors) connecting Crossroads instead of standard corridors. Characters can move on foot using the Movement Action or use the Rover to travel between Exit Rooms. Crossroads are connected to surrounding Areas (treated as special Technical Corridors), and Noise markers from Crossroads are placed in corresponding Areas. [p.31 — Crossroads & Areas; Moving on the Mars Surface]

Watch out: Crossroads cannot have Malfunction or Fire markers, and Noise markers are never placed on Paths. Additionally, when a Danger result occurs on a Crossroads, all eligible Intruders on the Mars Surface move to that Crossroads. [p.31 — Crossroads & Areas; Mars Surface Die & Deck]
