When can I play optional actions during Harmonies?

Quick answer

Optional actions (Take 1 Animal card, Place 1 Animal cube) can be performed at any time during your turn, even between placing tokens.

Details

Optional actions in Harmonies are Take 1 Animal card and Place 1 Animal cube. These can be taken in any order during your turn, and you may perform them between placing tokens from the mandatory "Take and place tokens" action [p.3 — DRMETURN].

  • Take 1 Animal card: This is optional and can be done once per turn. You choose one of the 5 faceup central Animal cards, place it above your Personal board, and take the required Animal cubes. You may have up to 4 Animal cards active at once [p.3 — Take 1 Animal card].
  • Place 1 Animal cube: This is also optional and can be done multiple times per turn. You can place cubes from your Animal cards onto your Personal board whenever their Habitat requirements are met, even mid-token placement [p.4 — Place 1 Animal cube].

Watch out: While you can interleave optional actions with token placement, the mandatory "Take and place tokens" action must still be completed exactly once per turn. For example, you could place 1 token, take an Animal card, place another token, place an Animal cube, and then place your final token [p.7 — PLAYER AID].
