How do traps interact with Lairs?
Quick answer
Traps are Hazard Features you place in your lair during building; Explorers must disarm them or suffer damage when encountered.
Details
Traps are one of two types of Hazards (along with Monsters) that you place in your lair during the building phase. You have exactly 3 Trap tiles to use, and they must follow the Peril Rule: each Goal (Exit and Chests) must have at least one path from the Start that doesn't pass through two Traps or two Monsters combined [p.5 — The Peril Rule].
When an Explorer moves into a space with a Trap, the interaction depends on whether they knew about it first. If they move into an Unknown space with a Trap, it immediately strikes them without warning, causing them to fatigue cubes [p.9 — Monsters & Traps]. If they move into a Known space with a Trap, they must disarm it by conducting a check against the Trap's Target number; failure triggers the strike effect, and success lets them claim the Trap token as an achievement [p.9 — Disarming Traps].
Watch out: In the base game, all Traps are Greased Pits with the same card, but the rulebook notes that if you introduce other trap types from expansions, you should write their initials on your map to remember which specific trap you encountered [p.9 — Monsters & Traps].
