How many points do elk score in Cascadia?
Quick answer
Elk scoring depends on which Wildlife Scoring Card is drawn for the game — there's no fixed point value; it's based on group size or shape shown on that card.
Details
Elk score for creating groups of elk, and most cards require the elk to be arranged in specific shapes or straight lines exactly as pictured on the card [p.11 — Wildlife Scoring Cards]. Unlike bears, elk groups may be placed adjacent to one another, but each individual elk can only count toward one scoring group/formation [p.11 — Wildlife Scoring Cards].
There are four possible Elk Scoring Card variants: (A) scores groups in straight lines, connected flat-side to flat-side of the hexes, in any orientation; (B) scores for exact shapes shown on the card, in any orientation; (C) scores an increasing number of points for each contiguous group of elk of any shape or size, based on how large the group is; (D) requires elk to form a circular formation as pictured [p.11 — Wildlife Scoring Cards]. The exact point values for each group size are printed directly on the specific card used that game, not in the rulebook text itself.
When elk groups are connected in ways that could be interpreted multiple ways (e.g., overlapping potential shapes/lines), always score using the interpretation that gives the highest number of points [p.11 — Wildlife Scoring Cards].
Watch out: Since only one of the four Elk Scoring Cards is randomly chosen per game [p.4 — Setup], the actual point totals will vary from game to game — check the physical card in play for exact numbers.
