How many skill dice does a newly trained skill grant?

Quick answer

A newly trained skill line grants no skill dice automatically — you only gain the skill line token, and must then spend XP separately to add skill dice to it.

Details

When you train a new skill line by visiting a trainer during a town encounter, you choose a faceup skill line token and place it in an open circular slot at the end of one of your attribute rows [p.31 — Advancements]. This only adds the skill line's attribute token itself; it does not come with any skill dice.

To actually add skill dice to that newly trained line, you must spend XP during the Reward Phase's Gain Advancements step, adding dice one at a time to open square slots in that row, following the normal attribute cost and prerequisite rules (e.g., level 2+ dice require an existing die of that level or one level below) [p.31 — Increase an Attribute]. This is shown in play: Ryan trains Restoring Light via a trainer visit, then later spends 1 XP each to add a Purge die and a Hasty Prayer die to that line during the Reward Phase [p.41 — Game Phases; p.44 — Reward Phase Example (Day 2)].

Watch out: This is different from adventurer creation, where your chosen starting skill line automatically comes with 2 free level 1 skill dice at no XP cost [p.19 — Adventurer Creation]. Skill lines trained later during the campaign (via a trainer) do not receive this free bonus — every die must be purchased individually with XP.
