How do mission cards work in Rebirth?
Quick answer
Mission cards in Rebirth are objectives that grant points when completed. In Scotland, they are private and drawn via Cathedrals; in Ireland, they are public and scored immediately by the first completer, with others scoring lower later.
Details
Scotland Mode (Private Missions):
When a player places a Tile adjacent to a Cathedral space for the first time, they place a Cathedral there and draw a Mission Card. This card is kept private, and its condition must be met by the end of the game to score points. Players can hold up to 8 Mission Cards (one per Cathedral). Even if tied with others for the condition, the player still earns points [p.4 — CATHEDRALS].
Ireland Mode (Public Missions):
Public Mission Cards are displayed face-up above the Board. When a player’s Tile placement completes a mission, the first to do so scores the higher value on the card and marks it with a Cathedral. Subsequent players who complete the same mission score the lower value. Each player can score each Public Mission only once [p.7 — PUBLIC MISSION CARDS].
Private Missions in Ireland:
Activating certain Round Towers (e.g., "Draw a Public Mission Card") lets players take a card from the deck as a private mission. These are scored at the end of the game if completed, using the higher value on the card [p.8 — Draw a Public Mission Card].
Scoring:
- In Scotland, Mission Cards are revealed and scored during final scoring.
- In Ireland, Public Missions are scored immediately upon completion, while private missions (from Round Towers) are scored at the end.
Watch out:
In Ireland, once a Public Mission is first completed, subsequent completions only score the lower value. Ensure you track which missions you’ve already scored.
