Are any Wondrous Creatures effects optional?

Quick answer

Yes — many card, Captain, and reward effects are optional, though some have mandatory steps once triggered (like arrow-linked abilities).

Details

When you play a Creature Card, you are not required to activate its ability at all if you choose not to [p.13 — Play a Card(s)]. However, if a card has multiple abilities linked by an arrow, activating the left-side effect obligates you to also perform the right-side effect — you can't get the benefit without completing the linked cost/action [p.13 — Play a Card(s)]. If a card's abilities are listed without an arrow, you may perform all, none, or just some of them freely [p.13 — Play a Card(s)].

Captain abilities are also optional: even after unlocking a Captain's ability and placing them on the Map, you can choose not to use the ability that turn [p.16 — Captain Ability]. Similarly, Achievement Marker Rewards are optional — you can decline the listed reward and instead take 2 VPs immediately [p.15 — Complete an Achievement].

Free Actions (using a Butterfly Net or an Energy) are inherently optional, since you may perform "as many Free Actions as you would like" or none at all [p.7 — Game Structure].

Watch out: Some abilities look optional but actually contain a hidden requirement — e.g., Finhead requires you to hatch an Egg before you can choose which Egg to gain; you can't skip the hatching step and still get the reward [p.13 — Play a Card(s)].
