How do I destroy a Monster card in combat?
Quick answer
To destroy a Monster (Encounter) card in combat, follow specific instructions on the card or from effects that explicitly say "remove from the game." Otherwise, standard rules place it on the bottom of its deck after resolution.
Details
-
General Rule: By default, after resolving a Combat Encounter, the Encounter card is placed on the bottom of its respective deck (green, blue, or purple) unless it is a Guardian (marked with $\boldsymbol{\Delta}$). Guardians are placed on the board as standees instead [p.22 — Encounter Card].
-
Removal from the Game: The rulebook specifies that cards are only removed from the game (destroyed) when explicitly instructed. This applies to Encounter cards if a specific effect, card, or rule states "remove from the game." In such cases, the card is placed behind the "Removed from the game" divider in the box and is no longer part of the campaign [p.15 — Remove from the Game].
-
No Default Destruction: There is no universal mechanic to destroy Monster cards during combat unless triggered by a specific ability, item, or story effect. For example, certain Secrets, Items, or Encounter Traits might include instructions to remove a card permanently.
Watch out:
If a card is removed from the game, ensure it is placed behind the correct divider in the box. Failure to do so could reintroduce the card unintentionally in later gameplay.
