If the Vagabond takes exhausted items via Aid, are they exhausted or refreshed?

Quick answer

Items taken via Aid are added to the Vagabond’s Satchel in their current state, typically face-up and undamaged (refreshed), unless they were already exhausted.

Details

When the Vagabond uses the Aid action, they exhaust one of their own items to give a matching card to another player in the same clearing and then take an item from that player’s Crafted Items box [p.18 — Daylight]. The state of the taken item depends on its previous condition:

  • Items in other players’ Crafted Items boxes are generally considered face-up and undamaged unless altered by specific rules (e.g., damage effects, which are rare for non-Vagabond items).
  • The Vagabond adds the item to his Satchel without changing its state. If the item was already exhausted (face-down) in the donor’s box, it remains so; otherwise, it stays face-up and undamaged.

Watch out:
Other factions (Marquise, Eyrie, Alliance) do not “exhaust” items like the Vagabond. Their Crafted Items are passive and not tied to action costs, so items taken via Aid are almost always refreshed (face-up/undamaged) unless explicitly damaged by rare effects. The Vagabond must still manage item limits and damage as usual [p.19 — Shifting Items].
