How does "playing for free" work on page 11?
Quick answer
"Playing for free" allows you to discard a cave card to play a dragon onto an existing dragon’s space without paying its normal costs, replacing the original dragon (which becomes tucked).
Details
On page 11, under the Guild of Highlands ability, "playing for free" refers to a specific action:
- Cost: Discard 1 cave card from your hand.
- Action: Play a dragon from your hand onto any existing dragon’s space on your player mat. This bypasses the standard entice cost (1 coin + dragon’s resource cost).
- Replacement: The new dragon replaces the original dragon in that space. The original dragon is tucked under the new one, and any cached resources, eggs, or tucked cards from the original dragon transfer to the new dragon.
- Capacity: The new dragon can only hold eggs up to its printed nest icon capacity. Excess eggs are discarded.
This ability does not require the new dragon to match the cave of the original dragon, but it must still be placed in a cave that matches its own preferred habitats. The action follows standard placement rules (left-to-right within the cave).
Watch out: If the new dragon has fewer nest icons than the original, eggs may be lost. Always check the new dragon’s egg capacity before using this ability. [p.11 — Additional Rules, Notes, and Concepts]
