The Castles of Burgundy: Special Edition · Board game rules
When can I build a castle and buy a tile from the black depot?
Quick answer
You can build a castle by placing it in your duchy using a die action matching the hex space color and adjacency rules. Buying a tile from the black depot costs 2 silver coins and can be done once per turn, independent of die results.
Details
Building a Castle
To place a castle tile in your duchy:
- Use a die action with a result matching the color of the target hex space.
- The space must be adjacent to a previously placed tile (or next to your starting castle for the first placement).
- This triggers an immediate additional action (e.g., placing another tile, taking workers, etc.) [p.7 — Castle].
Buying from the Black Depot
- During your turn, you may buy one hex tile from the central black depot by paying 2 silver coins.
- This action is separate from your two die actions and can be performed at any time during your turn (before, during, or after die actions) [p.10 — The central "black depot"].
- The purchased tile is moved to your player board’s storage (key spaces).
Key Differences
- Castle placement requires a die result and follows adjacency rules.
- Black depot purchase is a standalone action requiring only silver coins, not tied to dice.
Watch out:
If you place a castle, the extra action granted cannot be used to buy from the black depot (as that requires payment, not a die result). The black depot purchase is a distinct option available every turn, limited only by silver coin availability.
