How do trade tokens work?
Quick answer
Trade tokens let you take a third Focus action when flipped, or can be gained from the Galactic board for a resource/Influence bonus; unused tokens must be stored on an Agenda slot or returned to the board each turn.
Details
During the Selection step, you may flip one of your own Trade tokens (placed next to your played Focus card) to gain the ability to take all three actions on your Focus in the Actions step, instead of the normal two [p.9 — Selection step]. You cannot flip a token on the same turn you gained it, though you may still spend it for other costs [p.10 — Actions step].
You can also gain a new Trade token by taking the bottommost token from the Galactic board (or the top one of a two-token stack) and immediately gaining the "Trade bonus" shown to the right of that space or any space below it — options typically include resources, a Bounty token, or similar rewards [p.30 — Trade tokens].
At the end of your turn (Clean-up step), you must find a home for every Trade token you still have: if you flipped one this turn, flip it back and return it to the Galactic board; any other unused token must either be placed on the bottom-right corner of an Agenda card in one of your Agenda slots (one token per Agenda, regardless of Corruption) or returned to the Galactic board [p.12 — Clean-up step, p.30 — Trade tokens]. When returning a token to the board, place it on the topmost empty space (solo/2-player), or, in 3–4 player games, on top of a bottommost stack of one token if present, otherwise the topmost empty space [p.30 — Trade tokens].
Trade tokens are hard-limited components — if none remain on the Galactic board, you simply cannot gain a Trade token or its bonus [p.5 — Component limitations; p.30 — Trade tokens].
Watch out: You cannot flip a Trade token during the Actions step — it must already be flipped during the Selection step of the same turn, and never on the turn you just gained it [p.9 — Selection step; p.30 — Trade tokens].
