Can I use non-mandatory abilities on my turn?
Quick answer
Yes, you can use non-mandatory abilities on your turn, but you may choose to skip them unless they impose a negative effect.
Details
During a character’s turn, they perform the top action of one ability card and the bottom action of the other. Players are not required to use non-mandatory parts of these actions unless the ability explicitly causes a negative effect (e.g., losing hit points, discarding cards, or applying a negative condition to themselves or allies) [p.18 — Character Turn].
For example, if an ability includes a beneficial effect (e.g., healing an ally or gaining a bonus), the player can choose whether to execute that part of the action. However, if the ability forces the character to suffer damage or another penalty, they must resolve that effect.
Watch out: Abilities that include both mandatory and optional components require careful reading. Only the parts explicitly tied to negative consequences are compulsory. Players should clarify with the group if an ability’s wording is ambiguous about mandatory vs. optional effects.
