When can I exhaust a character after using an ability?
Quick answer
A character can be exhausted when using an ability that requires it (e.g., basic powers, ally actions, or triggered abilities). Exhausted characters remain so until the end of the player phase, when all cards are readied.
Details
To exhaust a character (or ally), the player must rotate the card sideways. This is typically done as part of paying the cost for an ability. For example:
- Basic Powers: Exhausting the hero/alter-ego is required to use basic attack, thwart, recovery, or defense [p.12 — Using a Basic Power].
- Ally Actions: Exhausting the ally is necessary to attack or thwart with it [p.12 — Using an Ally].
- Action Abilities: Some abilities explicitly require exhausting a card as a cost [p.13 — Triggering an Action Ability].
Exhausted characters cannot be used again for abilities requiring readiness until they are readied. All characters are readied simultaneously at the end of the player phase [p.14 — End of Player Phase].
Watch out:
If a character is already exhausted, it cannot be used for another ability that requires it to be ready. For example, an exhausted ally cannot attack or thwart again in the same round. Additionally, changing form (hero to alter-ego or vice versa) does not affect the character’s ready/exhausted state [p.11 — Changing Form].
